Unicorn Training, one of the UK’s longest established and most respected online learning companies, has reported record sales and growth of a third in 2015.
Unicorn sales have exceeded £5.6m (US$8.5m), a 33% rise on 2014, in this calendar year, with more new customers won than ever before as well as the company achieving double-digit growth in recurrent revenue from a loyal customer base.
In 2015 Unicorn’s online learning and performance platform, SkillsServe, was ranked the world’s number one LMS for financial services and fifth overall, and Unicorn will be marking its record year on Stand P14 at the Learning Technologies 2016 conference and exhibition at Olympia on Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 February.
Peter Phillips, Unicorn co-founder and CEO, said: “Over the past 12 months we have seen sustained growth in demand across all our main activities; platform, bespoke content development and our off-the-shelf compliance library.
“This is particularly true in our core sector, financial services, where demand for high quality regulatory and compliance training, together with increased awareness of the risks of cybercrime, are being driven by rigorous, new UK regulatory standards.”
Unicorn is uniquely positioned to offer turnkey solutions, combining SkillsServe’s sector-leading features with relevant and up-to-date content and outstanding instructional design, backed by long-standing partnerships with such industry bodies as the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and the British Bankers Association (BBA).
In addition, having acquired a strategic stake in the world class games studio, Amuzo, at the end of last year, Unicorn is also able to meet the growing demand for mobile just-in-time learning, serious games and on-demand video content.
Peter added: “Looking ahead to 2016, I believe this robust and scalable business model will continue to generate strong growth in our core business.
“Add to this the exciting new opportunities opened up through our partnership with Amuzo and for a company whose purpose for over 25 years has been to provide great learning experiences through the innovative use of technology, these are exciting times.”

Broker ASSESS, the broking industry’s most widely-used, authoritative online training and competency resource, has undergone a comprehensive upgrade. The new solution was officially re-launched by BIBA chief executive Eric Galbraith at the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) 2012 Conference and Exhibition today (Wednesday 16 May).
The upgraded Broker ASSESS has been developed to deliver a more complete, engaging and cost-effective online learning and development experience to help brokers better meet the challenges and professionalism demands of their ever-evolving industry.
Broker ASSESS provides comprehensive support for compliance training and CPD needs. Hosted on Unicorn Training’s SkillsServe platform, it has a highly intuitive user interface, easy to use search and browse for content features, more powerful management and reporting functions, and excellent integration with wider CII and BIBA broker services.
The unrivalled range of industry specific content focuses on improving brokers’ understanding of how regulation impacts on their everyday business practices. The new content includes a series of role-specific, interactive case studies focused specifically on the broker market plus a range of other context-based resources.
In February this year Broker ASSESS was awarded 2012 Microsoft Learning Technology Solution of the Year at the Learning and Performance Institute (LPI) awards.
The LPI judges recognised Broker ASSESS as a really effective use of learning technologies, covering core skills, development and CPD. They stated, “The system clearly demonstrates that, whilst technology is important, content is critical.”
Eric Galbraith, BIBA Chief Executive, said: “The system has had a huge impact helping many brokers to demonstrate that they are meeting FSA training and competency regulations. The upgraded system is a testament to the hard work of the broker ASSESS team and the brokers on the working groups who have helped to developed the system even further.”
Steve Jenkins, director of financial markets for the CII, said, “We have totally refreshed the content to support regulatory learning and assessments. Broker ASSESS is now even simpler and more intuitive to use. One touch reports are available for managers, compliance and training managers and we will shortly be introducing online appraisals and file checking to support brokers.”

iiiConnect is the result of a collaboration between the III, Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and Unicorn to provide eLearning to the Irish insurance market. The aim was to deliver an excellent learning experience to the III’s members, giving them greater flexibility in training and educational services and tailoring their learning to fit their schedules, whilst establishing the III as the primary provider of training and development in the Irish market.
The eircom Spider Awards are considered Ireland’s most prestigious online awards celebrating Irish internet excellence, and the results will be announced at their annual awards dinner on November 10.
Unicorn Consultant, Helen Watts, explains.

“With more than 15 years’ experience working together delivering innovative eLearning solutions to the UK and international insurance and financial services industry markets, Unicorn Training and the CII were uniquely placed to assist the III in developing iiiConnect.”
iiiConnect enables its members to complete their studies, maintain CPD compliance and advance their careers in line with the III’s vision of a community where professional excellence and the highest ethical standards provide career and personal fulfilment.
For pre-qualification members, a specifically-tailored, suite of engaging, interactive eLearning, personalised study routemaps, exceptional event management tools, iiiConnect’s Knowledge Sharing Environment, webinars and exam test papers and quizzes provide comprehensive pre-exam support.
Meanwhile, the updated Minimum Competency Code (MCC) dictates that, as of 1 December 2011, Irish insurance industry employees must annually complete 15 hours CPD to retain their designation. iiiConnect incorporates sector leading CPD functionality.
This functionality not only includes access to CPD accredited eLearning but students can manage event bookings and download lecture powerpoints, keep up to date with the latest industry news, get help from subject matter experts and share their study experiences with other students through a wide range of diverse learning tools and resources.
iiiConnect integrates with III members’ PSAB-GI (Professional Standards Advisory Board – General Insurance) CPD compliance management portfolio. Both Face to Face and eLearning CPD lectures attended by members are automatically logged and recorded in each student’s PSAB-GI CPD portfolio.
Frank Craven, III Director of Management Systems, added: “We are constantly striving to improve our member experience with us and ensure they have the best opportunity to manage their professional and educational development. Our investment in iiiConnect gives our members greater flexibility to avail of our services. We are delighted with the positive member feedback we are now getting.”

Scottish Widows online study program PASS is now taking IFA registrations ahead of the Chartered Insurance Institute’s round of exams in April 2009.
The Professional Advisory Study System (PASS) provides free access to study planning tools, an online resource centre and subsidised CII course material and exam entry. According to Scottish Widows analysis of the results from the April 2008 exams, advisers using PASS achieved pass rates which exceed the national average by 26 per cent across the exam spectrum.
Scottish Widows head of market relations George Andrew commented on training “Post the FSA’s statement, many advisers are looking at how they’ll upgrade their qualifications. The key factor for most is to avoid disruption to their businesses and their customers. Anything which shortens the time to qualification will be welcomed and we expect demand for PASS to be even higher than for the previous sittings.”
Unicorn worked with the CII and Scottish widows to develop the PASS training solution on our Study Serve learning management system. Scottish Widows now plan to roll out training to all other advisers on a payment basis (as part of a study package).
